Carter kept finding their shells on his play set and wondering what they were. I tried explaining how the cicada start in that shell and then a big fly like thing "the cicada" comes out and leaves the shell behind. Kind of like a caterpillar makes a cocoon and then leaves it behind when it turns into a butterfly. This is a great site to show your kids if they too are wondering how it works. There is a short video (5 seconds) of the cicada coming out of it's shell.
So one day last week while playing in the sand Carter decided to see how many shells he could find in our yard
I think the official count was 29 shells and one cicada... He almost had two cicada, but the second one started moving it's legs and wings and that was just a little too much for him. He stuck to the shells after that.
And he also found this laying in our garage. I think it fell off of the front grill of my car. :(
we don't have a lot of them down here, but what we do have is a bunch of crispy, dried up, worms all over the sidewalks because of the heat and lack of rain. Every time we walk by one on our walks, vince freaks out! AJ just picks them up like they're a little twig. yuck! Boys!
